How do I check my child for Scoliosis?

The warning signs of scoliosis usually start to appear between the ages of 9 and 14. Effective, proven treatments are now available and early diagnosis is very important for successful treatment. Doing these simple checks at home could prevent cosmetic disfigurement, a life time of pain and even surgery.

Step 1: Have your friend/family member stand with their back facing you.

What to look for:

  1. a low shoulder
  2. a prominent shoulder blade
  3. visible curve
  4. hip asymmetry
  5. waist asymmetry

Step 2: Adams Test

Have your friend/family member stand with their feet together then ask them to bend forward, keeping their legs straight and letting their arms hang towards the floor.

What to look for:

  1. Rib hump
  2. Waist hump

*these at home tests do not replace the need for an assessment by a qualified health care practitioner. If you or someone you know has any of these signs make an appointment to see a healthcare practitioner specialising in scoliosis today. Treatment is available and early diagnosis is the key to success.
